My son has a large splinter of wood in his arm. The site of entry has since healed up. Will it gradually disperse or will he need an operation to remove it?

several years ago my husband got a thorn from a foreign bush in his thumb, he had x rays as the area was rather swollen and painful but the doctors claimed there was nothing there. Anyway 5 years later while sitting with the vicar organising our wedding it popped out the other side of his thumb!!! it had turned black the thorn not his thumb lol. His thumb swelling reduced really quickly and now he is fine. so moral of the story is, if you cant remove it then your body will reject it eventually!

you might want to get that wood removed because it could lead to a blood infection which are usually unseen by the naked eye they might have to have an operation or they could open the heeled wound and simply take the wood out and they would stitch it up and do blood test until next time

The body will sense the foreign object and an infection will produce puss which will enable the splinter to be pushed out.

Go to your GP and get this removed so that it does not become infected and require cleaning up and antibiotics and a possible scar. It will become infected so dont wait for that to happen. GP tomorrow.

i work in a pharmacy and we usually recommend a paste called magnesium sulphate paste. it works by drawing the splinter out.people also use it to draw out boils.I'm pretty sure that this is what your doctor would recommend as well. maybe it is worth a try.good luck.

I got grass burrs in the palm of my hand in the summer. I can still see the dots under my skin. If it is big, I would in no way wait to see. I would go to the doctor. Especially if it is your child. Better safe than sorry.

It needs to come out - you should've never let it heal in the first place.

You can either:

a) take him to a doctor

b) take a pin or needle(sterilize it with rubbing alcohol) and open the wound back up, and then with a pair of hemostats or needle nosed pliers (again, sterilized) reach in and pull it out - depending on how deep it is you might be able to get it out with your fingernails.

Expect a lot of screaming if you do it yourself - but it'll make a man out of him.

No hunny to be on the safe side i would get it removed. If its not an option to do it yourself then get him to the doctor. It sounds daft but i wouldnt take any chances myself.Infection is a big worry.

know his body will not push it out , It would be best if you took him to the doctor and have it remove, or he may end up with some serious infection
