LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In my humble opinion it is probably the best book ever, ever written, past or present.

The Picture of Dorian Gray absolutely! The Grapes of Wrath is a historical book and also with history in mind I would recommend Roots and Queen by Alex Haley. Which history are you looking at? because there are some good historical era bound books by Balzac. The Blood of Others is another book about history and people by Simione de Beauvoir, there are English translations of this book. I hope this helps.

I've always loved The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. It's the story of a man who is framed and imprisoned. While he is in prison, he loses everything - his father dies, his beloved marries another, his friends abandon him for various reasons. But he meets an old man who tells him where a treasure can be found, and when he escapes prison after 20+ years, he sets out to get revenge on everyone who betrayed him. And once he starts, he finds that he has set things in motion that he can't quite control, and some things were not what he thought.

It's a brilliant read, I think.
