i can't say, but i do know that at the westernmost black college (langston university now) it was not originally built as a college. It was an agricultural school for "black boys" in the beginning. So it slowly evolved, eventually becoming a land grant university at the same site. Things don't always start how they end up.
i worked at langston for 2 years and learned about all this.
most black colleges existed before integration where blacks could get educated. i know many were supported by northern abolitionists after the civil war.
