The romanticized version of a "turning into a bat, sunlight will kill them, a stake through the heart etc..." is a little far fetched, but....
There are people who are allergic to the sun.
and a stake through the heart would put an end to practically anything.
There are vampire bats who drink the blood of animals.
There are cannibals.
Back in the day many believed that if they ate the heart of their enemy, they would gain their enemies power.
Many serial killers ate the flesh of their victims and drank their blood.
ever known someone who just drains the energy from you just by being in the same room?
All of these are forms of vampirism.
still don't believe?
Believing in vampires makes more sense than believing in god!
at least we have proof of vampires!

Why do people believe? Well, it's simple really. In folklore (eastern european where the stories originate) vampires were thought to be people. Obviously it was the actual vampire- the vampire bat- but the stories were there (1) to scare people int onot leaving the village at night and (2) the church used them to frighten people into worshipping God.
As to werewolves, well I guess it's like they say: the full-moon brings out all the wackos. Werewolves I guess are just stories. Lycanthropy couldn't really happen, because the human body is incapable of such change in such a short amount off time and then to reverse the change is impossible. But people who do change at the full moon will only experience a changed mental state (probably from trauma) that makes them appear like animals (or wolves particularly) and people just start callign them werewolves.
Now this is going off the point, but as to the God thing I have a few points to make. (1) If you have ever heard of the Diary of Anne Frank then you know her explanation. People just need something to believe in because it can get them through the tough times in life, knowing that there is always someone there. (2) Humans need something to explain the things we can't explain. The sun was worshipped and feared as a god because the poeple that did the worshipping had no satelite technolgy like we do today. (3) Although a lot of people will say they don't believe in God, it's only natural that they will say this. They have been brought up being forced to believe it, and when someone says "God gave us free-will", they say "Okay, I don't believe in God anymore". They turn it against others because at this stage in their life they will have the right to make their own decisions and their parents aren't going to be able to abby them all their lives. I personally believe in God because it gives me hope. I guess the people who believe in vampires and werewolves, goign a step beyond being interested, really want it so that something interesting will happen in their lives for once so that they can stop complaining about boring things and complain about these creatures of the night that keep popping up every now and then. And of course there is always the possibilty that these people want to be either a werewolf or a vampire.

Hi. Human nature is why. Mortals have to believe in 'something'-that's the way it has ALWAYS been recorded in history-and '...repeating itself'...The belief/faith question is ancient, my dear, and who truly knows the answer? To each his own; whatever works for one person does NOT necessarily work for another! As for myself, personally, i was brought up catholic but now i am a practising christian pagan - & ALWAYS for the 'greater good', so i do believe in witches, ghosts, spirits, etc. (personal experiences 2 cause wonder if i am crazy?!) And as for vampires and such, my ancestors come from Romania and i have always had 'fascination' for the TRUE history behind 'vampirsm' and the true count. Check it out and for a good read, Bram Stoker's "Dracula" to start b4 HOLLYWOOD got a hold of it!! Just like fairies and ghosts, if truly have an 'open' mind, 'sensitive', and are MEANT to 'witness' paranormal creatures and the like, it will come. I hope this is helpful to you, and remember what truly is reality, anyway? Perception and action is key.
Blessed be!
PS: The whole blood thing is something i REALLY don't want to debate, but i WILL say this: it is a precious gift of life and should NOT be abused! (Besides, PEOPLE who 'dabble' in this activity in today's time & age should REALLY PAY ATTENTION AND BE AWARE! Knowledge is the true power here...

Ahem. For one thing, you definately haven't studied up on this. One, vampires are not "allergic" to sunlight. Two, werewolves aren't neccessarily hairy. Werewolves, or Lycians is the preferred term, are just normal people who turn into wolves at a certain time. Ever heard of the phrase "Seeing is not believing"? Well, it's the other way around, but what I mean is, you always have to really have proof and see to believe. And besides, I have two friends that is a vampire and a Lycian.
And never believe what Hollywood does. Seriously, that's common sense.

Hi, I'm from Romania, and I never seen one. But I sow something unusual on news. There are some people on village who believe that when someone is killed he becomes a "strigoi" - this is more a spiritual thing, few days after someone dies killed or in pain - he comes in the dreams of more people, the ones that he knows and trust. He tell why he comes or just like an image but no speaking. After you have such a dream, when you woke up you feel bad, head ache, stomach ache ...
When this happens, the people from the village dig the grave, take his heart and burn it. So his soul can be liberated, free. If they don't do this the ones who dreamed the dead will fell worst and worst.
This is not a christian ritual, but it is used on villages.
The story on the news is that a grave have been re-opened and the heart of the man was took away .... the village people confirmed the events saying that there was a seek little girl who dreamed the dead. After the ritual she and one sister of the dead man feel much good, no more head aches.

I don't know if they are real or not but if there's no proof of somethings dose not mean its real or not. I think there maybe Vampires and Werewolves because there are stories not from movies I mean stories like the Great Wolf in the Rocky Mountains or others. Not like Underworld even if is a good movie but I think that werewolves are more real than vampires but I like vampires more.

Do you beleive in God? Because the exact same arguement applies to that mythical creature as well.
And before you go discounting werewolves, try looking up Lycanthropy - it is a real psychological disease in which humans BELEIVE they turn into wolves.... And, while the hollywood vampire is a thing of the movies, there are hundreds accounts of real people throughout histtory who have fed on blood or bathed in it under the mistake beleif that it would increase their life spans...
Point is, the lore is based upon fact.

You don't have to believe in such things. But some people do - coming from their own experiences or from what others have been telling them.
I personally used to think that I was an allien, because I used to see the same dream over and over any time I wanted, and the weird part was - it was about nothing that I could compare on this earth. And another thing - any time I saw that dream I felt like I was flying through the clouds. THE ONLY THING I'M SURE ABOUT MYSELF - I'M EXTRAORDINARY FOR SURE. So go and talk about it !! With who? You won't believe me.

You people who say that it is ridiculous to believe in God are not understanding what God means. To me it means a God who created the earth and me and will one day come back to save us from this sinful world. For others it is something to live for, something to believe in. If there are no punishments in the afterlife from what you do in this life than why does anything you do in life matter? So before you go bashing people who do believe think about what you do.

Well boo's and ghoul's this is the mythology & folklore section. Werewolf and vampire beleivers can get together here and you know hang out. Yes I too say that they are real somewhere some place. Yes there are people who are here in this section that do not beliveve but I still do not care since I beleive what I beleive and you can think what you think. And that culture vulters and fiend fans is what I think. What realy gets to me though is that this person also stated "that they" said "that they don't I repeat do not beleive in god." Now that is what really gets to me. So you don't beleive Jesus to be your personal lord and savor. Fine I demand you to pray your head off!!
