To get any good job, you will need a BFA inGraphic Design, or you neet to be really freaking good without school. There are some famous designers that have been, but you have the same amount of chance as being a pro-ballplayer.

There are many things you need to know besides the programs (adobe creative suite-InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, as well as Quark, Flash...etc.). A refinement for typography is just as important, if not more, than image creation.

For a portfolio, I would suggest 6-8 pieces that represent a variety of concepts (not in order of importance):

Logo, icon or symbol Design

(also) Identity Systems: Corporate logos, typefaces, colors, etc. all working together.

Book Design (yes, actual multi-page documents, not just covers)

Information Design

Typography

Large Format (posters)

Packaging structures

So aside from the actual artistic and aesthetic prowess involved, that would be my suggestion.

Have some design talent, a good eye for co lour and a strong sense of composition. Then mac skills in programmes such as Indesign, Freehand or Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark and Dreamweaver or Flash. Your choice of programme will be closely linked to the kind of work you wish to do.

Its a rewarding career choice, and it can be exceptionally demanding. I speak from experience. But go for it
