Basically a move away from realism to more abstract, experimental styles like absurdism, Brecht and epic theatre, Pinter, etc. More variety of style and purpose. I think theatre has gotten quite psychologically complex in the second half of the 20th century as well (absurdism, Pinter, etc.). It's not all about having a good old-fashioned, entertaining show anymore. Although that still exists too.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking here. Which theatre movement are you refering to? Popular theatre? Underground theatre? Absurdism? Brechtian theatre? Etc.

Narrow this down a little and somebody here might be able to give you a decent answer. I'll add this to my watchlist so if you edit the question I will see it.
