what are the rules for the game called Shots and Ladders. Hows the game start?

someone is chosen to be first then each player moves his or her piece around the board. If you land where the ladder begins you can climb it, if you land where the top of the slide is you must slide down it, First 1 to the top wins

Do you mean "Shutes and ladders"? The game starts by each player spinning to see who gets the biggest #. You start with your player piece off the board in the bottom lefthand corner.
