Well, what are you aware of at this very moment? Your body, your room and surroundings, maybe your feelings and possibly those feelings of someone nearby. Are you fully aware of your thoughts? Imagine how much more exists than what you are currently aware. Conscious awareness it getting in touch with the higher mind and grasping a capability to understand much more than we currently are able. Mediation is a means to doing this. When we meditate we clear our mind of the mundane and contemplate on a concept or concentrate on reaching new vistas of comprehension. Some prefer to empty their mind of thoughts and let the universe supply the information needed. Seek and ye shall find. Mediation is a form of seeking awareness. Some see it as a form of prayer. It can both relax you and thrill you with what you find. The more you become aware of, the more compassion you gain along with the understanding of the world and the people within it.
Blessings on your journey :-)

A state of altered consciousness is the more correct term. You have been there every day! unless you were sedated.
What is being described is the hypnotic trance. Anytime you are concentrating on something hard enough as to be able to block out distractions you are there. Watching tv,driving , the period just before waking,or going to sleep. By the way hypnosis has been marketed under more than 800 names because people may be a little gunshy about the name hypnosis. Find a experienced hypnotist and by the time you finish the second or third class you will be an expert. Relax and enjoy!!!

This is a complicated question, but it can be simplified by understanding that we all have several different levels of awareness. There is our conscience level ( how most of us go through our day), our sub- conscience level that is often brought out while sleeping and meditation and our collective conscience level that is how we as a species evolve. To reach a state of meditation that you can access the sub- conscience you must practice. A quiet environment helps as does learning to quiet the conscience by letting your mind drift with your breath (think of the tide ebbing and flowing). Hope this helps!
