For example, how old do you have to be in 8th grade etc. I would just like to know because i always watch american shows, and they say 7th grade 6th grade etc, and have never been able to compare to what us brits call, year. Many Thanks

college usually four years, 18-22, but most go for more.
We have elementary, middle (or junior high) and high school. Elementary is kindergarten to fifth (or sixth, depending on the state) grade, middle school (or junior high) is 6-8 grade, or 7-9 (depending on the state), and high school is 9-12 grades.
We go to school from on average the end of August to June (depending on states and districts, etc.)

In the state now days you may not start 1st grade till you are 6 yrs. old. You must reach the age of 6 by the end of September of the yr. you start school or you will have to wait till next yr. to start first grade.
Ex:
Birthdate is Sept 10...School starts on August 31st (for instance) and you are 5 but WILL be 6 before the end of the month..
Birthday is Oct 1st...School starts Aug 31st. You may not start first grade this year because you will not be 6 until after the end of September.
You may start kindergarten at 5, but the same rule applies to the birthday.
You should graduate by the time you are 18 unless you are held back(flunk) for some reason or due to illness.
Used to be you could start first grade at 5. I did. I was in college by the time I was 17. Birthday is Jan 19th

Most kids start kindergarten at 5 years old, some at 4. So by 8th grade, you are either 12 years old going on 13 or 13 going on 14.

Hello, and thanks for your question. generally, a child is five years old when entering Kindergarten. Elementary schools are traditionally K-5, or Kindergarten through the fifth grade. A child, depending on which month of the year they were born will be ten years old when in the fifth grade. By Middle School (or traditionally called Junior High School) a child will be 11 years old in the 6th grade. After three years of Junior High, the child will enter High school at the age of fourteen, beginning in ninth grade. I graduated High School at age 17 because my birthday is in the summer, which means most students will be either seventeen or eighten when graduating High School. I hope this helps.

Add five to the grade to get the age of starting in that grade.
1st Grade = 6 years old
12th Grade = 17 years old

Kindergarten starts at five, so in the first grade a student is generally six. Just count on up from there.
In high school, the freshman year is the ninth grade, sophomore is tenth, junior is eleventh, and senior is twelfth.

Most children here start kindergarten at the age of 5. They usually graduate from the 12th grade at 18. Its different here then it is in England from what I understand.

Typically a first grader is 6yrs old however can be different because of being held back for poor grades or behavior, and as such a 12th grader would be 18 at graduation
