If the problem is air coming through around the glass panes, then you may be able to putty the edges, or use a caulking gun, or a caulk tube, which can be squeezed.

Check the perimeter of the frame for gaps. These can be filled with caulking or with pressurized foam, either of which you can get at any hardware store..

If the problem is just old and/or shrunken frames, leaving space around the windows themselves for air to come in, you can get a kit from the hardware store that gives you a sheet of clear plastic to put over the entire window. The kit parts make it removable, so you can remove it in spring, fold it up, and re-use it next winter..

Mary,

A blind or window shade will help a lot. I was always cold because we just have curtains & they are tied back. I put up a blind and at night I pull it all the way down against the window sill.

It isn't air tight but it stops the drafts enough to make a big difference.

If you buy a blind get one a couple inches longer then your window height so you can be sure to get it all the way down and close off the bottom.

Yes, since we are halfway through winter your best bet is to use a plastic film to cover the window until spring when you can address the problem when it is warm enough to do so.

Here is a site that describes how to use the plastic film:

I use that shrink wrap stuff (at walmart). you seal it with your hair dryer, works great and then i cover the windows with long drapes and blinds. Helps alot!

there are alot of things you could use. insulated curtains, the type of plastic that when put on looks totally clear. you could even find a nice decorative towel and put that on it.

Clear plastic that you can either staple or tape to the frame.
