A friend of mine suggested that I see if a womens' magazine will publish my story as a series of short stories, any ideas of which magazine and who I can e-mail about it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is a fictional murder mystery that I just made up as I went along. All I am hoping to do is find someone to let me do a short story series.

Well, it's tough to sell something not targeted at a particular publication. So, you need to read a whole bunch of magazines that do print series and see if yours is similar in style (not content!) to anything out there.

Once you find one that seems to fit your style, then ask for their writer's guidelines. Follow the guidelines for submission. If they want a query, send a query. If they want the manuscript, send the manuscript. Editors have very little time and have guidelines in place for a reason. Follow them.

It is okay though to say you're looking forward to hearing from them in a couple weeks, or something, then call in about four weeks if you haven't heard from them. Remember editors are BUSY and they hear from hundreds and hundreds of wannabe writers every month. Woman's World has over 2,000 submissions a month for their short romance section. They print 52 manuscripts a year. So, you've got to be GOOD and you have to meet their requirements, and you have to be polite to prove you're easy to work with. It doesn't matter how good you are if you're a pain in the behind to work with, you won't get the contract.

Good luck!

Is the the "story of your life"?

Don't count on finding a taker, there are lots of those out there.

You can check the publication listings at Writers Market, or do a random search for "short stories" and see what comes up. Or you can go to a book store and brooze the magazine stand. All magazines will have contact information for guidelines or a website.

Some zines do publishe series, so you could also explore that market (mostly mysteries) but its worth a try.

Some of the established magazine will not accept freelanced work of any kind.
