No. I was GBS positive 2 times and both times my child was fine. The concern really sets in once your water breaks and mine broke before they could start the IV and then I was rushed in for a c-section. Both times my babies were fine. It's a real low likelihood of the baby having a problem but it's better to be safe than sorry and treat it with the antibiotics in labor. Your baby will be fine. :)

I just wanted to add that they don't treat you for it now (you're probably 36 wks, right?) because it can go away and come back before delivery. It's just easiest to wait until then. It's not harmful for you to have the antibiotics in labor even if it's gone away.

Here is some additional information about GBS positive results
http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancycomplications/groupbstrepinfection.html

it says in the article that treating during pregnancy may not help prevent infection during labor and that antibiotics during labor has been found to be the best way to prevent infection to your baby. Your baby doesn't get exposed to the bacteria until it passes through the birth canal so treatment during pregnancy might not work.

What your dr didn't tell you is that there is possibility that you wont even be infected at the time of the birth- and there are natural remedies that you can use to reduce the risk at birth.

The main concern with the use of antibiotics during birth is the increased risk of thrush to the baby which can make breastfeeding difficult and hard to get rid of. It can be passed back and forth from baby to you to baby and make breastfeeding painful- talk to you dr about all the pros and cons of antibiotics and trying the remedies below. there's no danger in trying the remedies and then getting tested again to see if the test is negative.

PS: if you end up having a c-section the antibiotics are not necessary since baby didn't go through the vagina at all. If they try to push the drugs after you've had your baby you can say no- why increase breastfeeding issues if it's not necessary.

It can't affect the baby until it comes down the birth canal, soo you don't have to be concerned about it until then. Just make sure you get to the hospital as early as possible so you can get the medicine. And it may not affect the baby anyway! it's just a precaution.

Be glad they tested you! With my first son, they did not test me for GBS. We almost lost him after delivery. He ended up in NICU for 2 weeks and then I developed an infection and ended up in the hospital for 3 days. Until delivery there is nothing they can go for you. Just be glad your Dr. tested you for it!

i was positive and my doctor gave me a pill for it. when i went into labor they gave me and antibotic in my iv and my daughter was fine. don't worry about it. you may be so close to delivery that he wants to wait to treat you until then. call and ask if your still feeling unsure about it.

They usually don't treat you till deliver. And all they usually do is give you antibotics during labor and delivery.
