Quoting the source below: "This size of the galaxy is probably more than 90,000; it's probably less than 160,000. Also, the galaxy does not have a sharp edge - it gets wispier as you get further from the center, so there's no clear definition of where to stop measuring."

The question you are asking is a bit faulty -- a "light year" is a distance. Are you asking how many light years across our galaxy is? Or how many years it takes for light to go from one end to the other? I imagine your text probably gives you the "long dimension" of the galaxy. If you could provide that value, it would help answer the question of HOW LONG it takes for light to go across the galaxy.

Bad question:
Years is a time.
Light years is a distance (like miles or kilometers). It wouldn't make sense to ask "If light travels across the long dimension of our galaxy, it would take about _____ miles."

Look up in your textbook what the longest dimension of our Galaxy is, in units of light years. Light takes one year to travel one light year. So the number of light years in the distance is the number of years light takes to travel.

Our galaxy, and all galaxies, don't have a sharp edge to measure diemensions from. They sort of just fade out gradually at the edges.

Also, a "light year" is a unit of distance, not time. It's better to say, "... it would take about ___ years."

In our galaxy, most of the stars are in a disk that is about 100,000 light years across in diameter, which means it would take 100,000 years for light to travel across.

No definite answer can be given. The radius of the universe is 13.6 billion light years, but the universe is expanding, so a light ray starting from an arbitrary point would require more than 27.2 billion years to reach the "other side" -- which is a meaningless concept anyway, becuause the space has no boundaries.

presently all theories of conceivable speedier than basic go back and forth run into one no longer conceivable to flee challenge. Time slows to a end close to to the speed of sunshine (technology has proved this). or perhaps with if we were to apply a gadget by technique of which lets go back and forth at such speeds Navigation might want to be almost no longer conceivable we will be attempting to navigate depending on the basic reaching us from products we've already exceeded. Many theories exist about using wormholes or movie star gates that could be a strong step yet as yet we haven't any strong mechanic for coming up some thing like this no longer to point having the flexibility to administration the position or at the same time as it comes out. As to Mike Smiths Quote regrettably that is depending in a land that presently looks fantasy. one among our present day maximum acceptable thoughts for top speed Sub basic go back and forth includes Anti count number count number Annihilation as a fashion to propel a deliver. this can be very efficient and sensible and can want to theoretically propel ships to round 10 % - 20 % of the speed of sunshine (sufficient to visit our nearest movie star in somewhat over 4 a lengthy time period) different thoughts are photo voltaic Sails which will also coach to achieve success technique of travelling to different Stars and Planets, at present day notwithstanding we are far flung. to respond to your unique question? certain if we deal with to we are able to quicker or later challenge to the celebrities (do exactly not assume movie star Wars or movie star Trek) area wars will be very not likely if we are able to generate the flexibility for FTL Wars in area might want to obliterate Stars themselves. and we would haven't any want to conflict for substances on the grounds that lets probable construct even with we want ourselves from the atoms chanced on contained in the universe round us.
