It depends on what you mean by "poor." If you mean homeless and starving, then no. If you mean driving a junky car, and living in a tiny apartment, and shopping at thrift stores, and doing without luxuries like cable tv, expensive clothes, and steaks for dinner, then yes. As long as you are not cold, hungry, or homeless, money has nothing to do with happiness ( it would be pretty hard to be happy if that was your situaton). Happiness, like anger, or being offended by the words of another, is a choice- and depends on the individual, not on anything outside of oneself.

The reason why poor people is happier than rich people is that they have less to worry about. You make think they are poor because they don't have the great things you may have that you consider yourself rich. In their eyes, they are rich and that is in the heart. Rich is just an illusion of items to the society. Take away all that and see if you can truly be happy and able to survive in life without it.

Yes - I think there are good and bad qualities to either situation. I had the opportunity to spend a couple weeks in Uganda a few years back and it really gave me a new outlook on my life. I'm not well off here, I worked at Target. But still, I obviously had much more than the people I met in Uganda. I was very shocked to see the joy and happiness that the people had in their seemingly needy life. They didn't seem like they were in need of anything. (I wasn't in a place where there was hard core starvation and disease)
Recently I began to miss being there because I saw that all the stuff I have is stressful. In US we have schedules to follow , entertainment everywhere, steady jobs, demands left and right on our time, 50 choices for shampoo... Even in our vegging out times, we have stress. I miss the relaxation of not having all these demands on me and not having to worry about so many options for having fun. It surprised me.
