It will probably vary from phone to phone. Sony Ericsson phones have a status option, which will give you your phone number. Press the 'more' button, then scroll down the list of options. For other phones, you may find your number in a 'Services' menu. Failing that phone a friend and they can obtain your number.
If you have a pay as you go, as opposed to contract, the top up swipe card that comes with the phone has it. If you have a top up swipe card your new number will be the second block of digits. i.e. xxxxxxx [phone number] x
