Because Washington was never defeated. His lost a number of battles but he did not loose the war. There is a big difference. The American revolution was alive as long as the Continental Congress and the Continental Army was alive. Washington had the very difficult job of trying to defeat the British Army (which at the time had the best army and navy and was the greatest nation on the earth) without losing his army. Often he was outnumber, out supplied, was facing better trained and experienced troops with mostly young kids you were in school or farmers the year before. He and his officers made many mistakes because they lacked the knowledge of warfare. But Washington had the ability to learn for his mistakes, and managed to keep the army together. You must realize that the soldiers of Washington's army were volunteers, with various terms of enlistments. Several times he managed to finally train an army into a unit that can stand against the British army only for the terms of there enlistments to expire then he had to start all over. He had to beg congress for the money to pay the troops, equip and feed his troops. Washington himself served without pay. He avoided taking the food from farms by force and tried to buy the food and supplies whenever possible.
There are a number of very good books on Washington and the American Revolution may I suggest that you expand your knowledge because Washington was a very interesting person, after all he was the father of the United States.

He was defeated only in some battles, but kept the ragged American troops together and motivated more than anyone else probably could have, eventually winning the war. He was a great leader, perhaps not a great military strategist.
A hero does not have to be the best at everything - they have to have enough strength and courage to effect a positive result - this he did.

Washington was defeated? What planet did you attend school on? Let me guess..you skip classes frequently? Let me explain something. Losing a battle does not mean you lost. Every great leader loses a battle or two. The only thing that counts is who won the war. Last time I checked we use dollars here and not pounds so I guess Washington won.

If Washington had been defeated by the British we would all be kow-towing to the Queen. Have you noticed that we're not ?
Washington was considered a hero because his army sent the British and the Prussians back where they belong. The British left many soldiers here ( under the ground ) thanks to Washington.

He was also charismatic and talked to people like men with responsibilities instead of children whose egos he might bruise.
