For me, when I meditate, I try putting my body asleep while keeping my mind awake. I lay down on my bed and start willing my body to relax and turn off, starting with my legs and working my way up until my face and my head is completely relaxed and no longer trying to send signals to the brain. Then I usually just follow thoughts that spring up until I forget where I am. The journey lasts for a little while, and I don't realize that I succeeded in exitting my body until I open my eyes and remember where I am. I can't really explain what I'm trying to feel when I do it. It's just a way of experiencing your mind when it isn't focused on anything but itself.

A meditative state to me, is one that your mind is not on conscience thoughts. You want to feel what is not felt by the conscience mind. ie: I feel my fingers touching the keyboard as I type, if I was in a meditative state, I might (not typing but my fingers on the keyboard for this example) feel the keyboard touching my fingers or the space between the keyboard and my fingers. Sounds simplistic, but try it.
And what do I think about ? nothing. As soon as a thought enters my brain I tell it to leave. Soon I reach a state that I am not conscience of thoughts entering my mind.
How is it done? Each will have a system that works for them. Some, it is quietness, others like myself like music to help me focus the music out so I am no longer conscience of it (this is done by me going "into" the music.
It is hard to acheive the place we are talking about, but I do know this, once you have gotten there, you know you arrived when you come out.
The answers you receive will all be differant, yet there will be a universal sameness. :o)

Meditation is concentration. When you practice it over a long time you will be able to conciously concentrate anytime and relax yourself or be aware of your surroundings. Its not easy and many people would need a master (spiritual) to help through the journey. It is a lifestyle than just one experience. You have to strengthen your systems before you actually begin. Yoga helps! and there are many other groups which do practice in mass. Try follow one single master and dont waver on your aim. keep sigle mindedness and make it your hobby. Over time you will master your body and soul. KEY sacrifices will be -Anger, jealous, greed, attachments, and proud. These are not just words if you think you can do this in this life time you are a winner everyday.
I hope that helps wish you Good Luck on your spiritual journey and dont think you are alone. God Bless you.

Meditation is used for many purposes ,mainly for opening the mind to parallel levels of the Inner Universe We have many undiscovered depths and if we become aware of this sense of being in another world then we have reached a conscious awareness.Transcendental meditation allows us to go to greater inter dimensional levels of communication.Meditating with crystals enhances our ability to do this ,the crystal you need is the one you are drawn to.The collective conscience is assisted by telepathy,in other words understanding others at a distance. This is part of inter-dimensional communication.Parallel Power.

You can meditate on anything, by focusing all your attention on one of the following examples: the breathing; heart beat; a candle flame; a sacred statue or crucifix; a chanted mantra like "Om"; etc.
Here's an unusual one. Turn your television to a channel number that has no programming, and just watch and listen to the static. It feels like you are watching atoms or molecules or quantum foam buzzing around.
