I'm trying to change my sleep schedule. I always get into bed early, but last night for example it was two hours before I fell asleep. I read a lot about it today and most sources say to only get in bed when I feel tired.
How tired should I be feeling? Right now, I am always tired. If I got in bed now, however, I know I wouldn't be able to fall asleep. If I did another task, I could probably stay up all night without actually dosing off. Any help on the subject?

you have a very real problem...the amount of sleep you need is solely dependent upon you. The norm is 7-8 hours when we are younger, 5-6 when we are older. If you fall far outside this norm, see a doctor who specializes in sleep disorders...you sound as if you are one of these people who has developed very bad habits. Do NOT go to bed unless you are ready to sleep. Do NOT read in bed, do NOT watch TV...Bed is for sleep. While others may be able to do all these things, you are not one of them.

The over-the-counter supplement, Melatonin, helps people to sleep--including those with jet-lag, and those who work rotating shifts. You will find it in the vitamin aisle of most stores.

Be sure to get enough fresh air and exercise during the daytime, and to eat healthily and drink enough water--this really is a part of it. Don't use caffeine after lunch time, and don't eat heavily after 6 PM.

Use lavender aromatherapy (which relaxes you) in the evening while drinking Chamomile Tea. Taking a warm bath while doing these helps many too.

Good luck, sometimes it's hard to change our hours around.

I have the same problem no matter how tierd Iam it takes me forever to fall asleep at night. For awhile I was taking a sleep med one made my tylenol called simply sleep it has not meds in it just simply for u to fall asleep with and is safe to use for awhile. Try taking some for a couple nights at the same time and get on a good sleeping scedule once your body is use to that scedule you will have no problems going to sleep at night. If the problem gets worse see a doctor.

It all depends on when you have to wake up. You should aim at 8 hours but I feel that you should just lay in bed with it quiet. Usually when you cant fall asleep it is because you are worried about things. If you can decrease your stress then you can sleep better probally.
