It remains one of Hollywood's most compelling, and unforgettable, mysteries.

On Aug. 5, 1962, the body of Marilyn Monroe was found in the bedroom of her Brentwood home. The 36-year-old movie star was naked and facedown on her bed.

An autopsy conducted by Dr. Thomas Noguchi, then deputy medical examiner, concluded that death was due to acute barbiturate poisoning, and a psychiatric team tied to the investigation termed it a "probable suicide."

Today, 43 years later, fans from around the world will gather, as they have for decades, near Monroe's crypt at Westwood Village Memorial Park to celebrate her life and mourn her death. John W. Miner, 86, will mourn too.

But there is bitterness and frustration as well for the former Los Angeles County prosecutor, who was at her autopsy and was one of those looking into her death. He didn't believe that the actress took her life in '62 and he doesn't believe it now, and Miner says he's heard secret tapes that Monroe made in the days before she died that prove the actress was anything but suicidal.

Whether Monroe died by her own hand has been debated and dissected by books, documentaries, conspiracy theorists, and Hollywood and Washington insiders alike for years.

Enough credence was given to the various reports that in 1982, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office reexamined the case. Miner, by then in private practice, was among those interviewed.

The resulting report notes that Miner mentioned the tapes. However, he did not say he had a transcript. Although the report concedes that "factual discrepancies" and "unanswered questions" remained in the case, it did not find enough evidence to warrant launching a criminal investigation.

As head of the D.A.'s medical-legal section when Monroe died, Miner had met with the actress' psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson. During the interview, Miner says, Greenson played the Monroe tapes, but only on condition that the investigator never reveal their contents.

Miner said he took "extensive" and "nearly verbatim" notes, and only broke the promise years after Greenson's death, when some Monroe biographers suggested that the psychiatrist be considered a suspect in her death. Miner recently gave a copy of the transcript to The Times.

Miner's transcript shows Monroe obsessing about the Oscars, describing a sexual encounter with Joan Crawford, craving a father's love from Clark Gable, yearning to be taken seriously as an actress by contemplating doing Shakespeare, and speaking candidly about why her marriages to baseball slugger Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller ended in divorce.

At one point, she describes standing naked in front of her full-length mirror assessing the body that captivated the world, knowing that she is slipping into middle age, and commenting that "my breasts are beginning to sag a bit" but "my waist isn't bad" and her buttocks are still "the best."

"You are the only person who will ever know the most private, the most secret thoughts of Marilyn Monroe," she tells Greenson, according to Miner's transcript. "I have absolute confidence and trust you will never reveal to a living soul what I say to you."

Miner contends that anyone reading the transcript would conclude that "there was no possible way this woman could have killed herself. She had very specific plans for her future. She knew exactly what she wanted to do. She was told by [acting coach] Lee Strasberg, maybe ill-advisedly, that she had Shakespeare in her and she was fascinated with the idea."

Miner has shown the transcript to several authors in recent years. In British author Matthew Smith's book "Marilyn's Last Words: Her Secret Tapes and Mysterious Death," the excerpts cover the early portion of the tapes, which have Monroe musing on Freud and free association, orgasms, Gable and her agent, Johnny Hyde. Seymour M. Hersh included a short reference to the late President Kennedy in "The Dark Side of Camelot."

Miner was also interviewed for a 1997 ABC documentary called "Dangerous World: The Kennedy Years," but ultimately no excerpts from the transcript were used.

The previously unpublished portions of the transcript include descriptions of her feelings for her ex-husbands, a dissection of why her marriages failed, a racy catalog of supposed sexual encounters, details of her dispute with 20th Century Fox, her friendship with Frank Sinatra, and her complaints about housekeeper Eunice Murray, who would discover her body.

*It's possible. She may have known confidential information about the Kennedy's.

Do you think the government had a part in her death?

*It's possible. She had relations with not one, but both Kennedy's, and as I statted, she may hove gotten hold of some confidential info, but others have said that she may've been pregnant with a child from them, or threatened to let some info out about the predency.

Do you think she had an affair with Robert Kennedy or John F. Kennedy? *Yes, it was well known that she did.

Do you think she took the pill that killed her willingly?* I dont understand what you mean. Did she take Barbituates? Yes. she was addicted to them at one point, and may have received other medications during her brief hospitalization.

Do you think she was injected with drugs and murdered? * This is a popular belied. A man by the name os Sam Giancanca who had tied to the mafia was allegedly said to have been hired by JFK to silence her.

Do you think the government should reopen and reinvestigate her case? Why? *Yes. Becuase there is too much spectualation and not enough certainty, and besudes she was an important figure in American history. She deserves her story to be truhfully told.

Do you think her death was covered up, and there may be missing information? What information? *Yes. The information would not be all inclusive until her case is reopened. Possible info- Was she murdered? How or why? What what the motive is killed? What information might she have known, and how was it condicive to the presidency or the U.S. And other personal info such as- what was the state of mind during the lasy hours of her death, and what lead her to that particular mind state?

* Possible. If she knew too much.

I think she was murdered and the Kennedy's had something to do with it. I'm sure she knew all about the Kennedy white house and things going on. Did you see the movie Blonde, this tells as many facts as they could legally get away with without getting a law suit slapped on them. I'm sure Marilyn was very sad and depressed too, the government can cover up and lie, change the facts and do anything they want they are powerful. I feel sorry for Marilyn she didn't have a very good life, but she is still loved by many.

Yes. One only needs to dig into the evidence. Why was no pills or yellow dye that is commenly found in suicides of memtul not ever found in the autospy. Or any needle marks. Or the fact that the housekeepers story changed over and over again givving diffrent times of when the body was found. Or how about the fact that no glass of water was found orginally when the first inital investagor was there investagating the death. Or the fact that the Night before neighbors heard a wonmen scream from marylains house screaming are you happy Now she is dead. There are more isssues that i can go into that show there is no evidence to actually show she commeted suscide but alot to show she was murdered.

Marilyn Monroe Killed

I believe that she was murdered. The day before her death a close friend reported that Marilyn told him that she was going to "blow the f-ing lid off of the Kennedy family". The next day shes dead.

The scene of the crime dosn't make much sense to me. There was no water or beverage around her bed. If I would have planned on killing myself I probably would have planned on bringing some water and not just spontaneously swallow the pill without water. The bottle of pills also had the lid put back on it. If you are OD'ing why would you take the time to put the lid on your bottle. Finally... I would imagine if you OD'ed you would lay down and just wait for it to come. When they found her she looked like she had been involved in a struggle... she was laying halfway off the bed. Her clothing also looked like it was falling off of her...hmm a struggle maybe.

I think that her love affair with JFK allowed her to know way too much information...which led to her death.

She was murdered, she knew too much and/or her affair with the then president AND his brother was in danger of becoming public. I read an interview with a friend of hers at the time who claimed she had a diary and had written about these affairs and things they tild her. Apparently Bobby liked to cuddle and spill his guts after sex. Also the friend said she was distraught when JFK stopped seeing her as she had dilusions of becoming the first lady (yeah right) and repeatedly called the White House.
Yes, I believe she was murdered to make it look like a suicide, and I also believe the housekeeper was paid or threatened to keep her mouth shut.

Yes, I think she was murdered. Yes I think she had affairs with both JFK and RFK. I think she was probably injected with drugs. I think there is missing info. I think she had a journal and maybe other info on the Kennedys and the govt so she was a liability to them. Also, I think that she and JFK had a child together and the child was taken from her to be raised by another family.

I believe Marilyn was murdered. There are too many things that just don't add up. Why did they take so long to call police? Why was her phone lines tapped. Her involvement with 2 powerful politicians made her a target. That was covered up. I have seen many documentaries on this case and I believe that her death was foul play period.
