If you have an icon for the speakers on your system tray then it seems like you have drivers installed that are accepted for the sound card that you have in the PC.
However, if there's no sound coming out when playing MP3 / Video files then there are a couple of things to check
1) Speakers turned on and plugged into the mains (where necessary). Are there any lights on the speakers and do they light up? If there are lights but they're not on then there's a power issue to the speakers.
2) Are the speakers connected to the correct socket on the back of the PC. There are typically 3 sockets on the back of a PC where the speakers look to fit into. Sometimes they are colourcoded lime-green, pink and pastel blue. That being the case, they want to be plugged into the lime-green hole. If not colour coded, then you want one with a symbol similar to this (apologies for REALLY bad drawing - best I could to with plain text lol):
((• –>
Essentially, a couple of progressively smaller curved lines with an arrow pointing OUT of them. In the absence of colour-coding, this is the correct speaker socket to use.
3) Is the volume turned up in the application? If it's something like Windows Media Player, check that the slider bar for the volume is not at the far left (or, for nero showtime, not at the bottom). Also, check that the application itself isn't muted. For windows Media Player, click on the picture of the speaker.
Hope one of those work for you :-)

The problem is not with drivers, please stop downloading drivers before you will damage your system.I have encounter a similar problem - what i did to rectify it might simply help you out.
1.check the status of your sound card to see if the device is working properly
2.check to see if nothing is muted within the sound system
3.use the sound troubleshooter to troubleshoot the sound card/it might detect a problem
4.finally open your system case and check if the sound card is properly fitted to the slot,if it does then unscrew it and tighten it back or alternatively just shake the sound card with zero force. You will be surprise your sound will come back from where it has gone to.Good luck

Right click on my computer select proerties, when the window appears click on the 'Hardware' tab. when the new window displays select 'Device manager' then in the window that appears check that there are no yellow exclamation marks on the sound, video and game controllers section. If there is then you will need to reinstall or download and reinstall new drivers.
If you do download and install keep a copy in case you need them again.

I would suggest that you right click your speaker icon in the task bar and open Volume Properties and check that all sliders are at max and that none of the mute boxes are ticked.
This should be done before anything else as it the most likely culprit.
Best of Luck.

Hi. Check the obvious first, loose cables, power to powered speakers, etc. Then try uninstalling your soundcard from control panel. Reboot and see if that works. If your PC has two outputs, a soundcard and an on-board, try switching them. Good luck.
