My mom and I saw this movie recently and I asked her why it wasn't nominated and her theory was that usually musicals aren't the kind of films to be nominated for Best Picture. I quickly reminded her that "Chicago" won Best Picture four years ago.

So, is it because musicals like "Dreamgirls" aren't really artsy enough to be considered for Best Picture or was it because there were some flaws in the making of the movie itself?

It's a very good film but sometimes a film is NOT equal to the sum of its parts. In other words, all the outstanding individual elements, like great performances and amazing music don't add up to a great film if the story isn't there.

You might also notice that four of the five films nominated for best picture were also nominated for best original screenplay and one of them was nominated for best adapted screenplay..i.e. ALL FIVE best picture nominees had nominated screenplays. It appears that the academy paid particular attention to writing this year in looking at best picture nominees and in my opinion, that's as it should be. How can it be a great film without a great story?

Having said all that, I loved the film, can't wait to buy it on DVD, and believe Jennifer Hudson deserves the best supporting actress nomination. But I wouldn't have nominated the film for best picture either. The story had some leaps and gaps and made me scratch my head a few times.

Well the Academy Award for Best picture is limited to only five nominations per year, and Babel,The Departed, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine, and The Queen had already been nominated.

And wikipedia states: "In addition, "Dreamgirls" is the first film in Academy Award history to receive the highest number of nominations for the year, yet not be nominated for Best Picture. Since three of its nominations are for the same award, it is only eligible for a maximum of six Oscars."

These two factors kind of limited Dreamgirls chances of making a Best Picture nomination.

It's not because if it is a musical or it's quality is superior or not.
Oscars is not about the best. It is about hype. The whole votation is like politics: there are campaigns and propagandas.

Probably, some voters assumed that "hey, since dreamgirls is a huge crowd favorite, im sure it will be nominated, so i'll just put my vote to {name of the movie}."

Usually dramas are nominated for Best picture. Dreamgirls was good. Since it wasn't nominated, I hope "Little Miss Sunshine " wins. Comedies and musicals are good too!

I'm not sure why anyone associated with the movie got a nomination.
