Alright first and foremost you obviously know that Castor Oil is a laxative, now ask yourself this what do laxatives do? They are used to pretty much clean you out so to speak and the result is diarrhea sometimes extreme diarrhea at that. Alright now what happens when you have extreme diarrhea, you get dehydrated now not only is this a very unsafe way to induce labor it is quite risky as well. Do a simple google search and read some of the stories from the ladies who have done it, most of them say it was the worst experience of their life and they would never do it again, it made labor much more painful and miserable for them, some it make them take a while to dilate and others experienced severe diarrhea for several days after the birth of their child. If this is something you don't think your doctor would be ok with you doing then chances are you shouldn't be doing it now should you. Read up on things before you do them especially when you are pregnant because it is no longer about just you there is another human being that can't make the choice of it they want to take that Castor Oil or not. Instead of being on here asking women who have tried it what they thought call your doctor and ask him/her what he would think about you using this method to self induce. I am not trying to sound rude at all or judgmental but please don't do something that could potentially harm your child. or yourself. it isn't worth it, your little bundle will come out when ready. Also consider the amount of women who get induced by their doctors who say that it was miserable and it took them forever to get to 10cm and the contractions where horrible and what not, alright now take a medical induced labor and add some laxative to the mix and I am sure you get the idea of where I am going. Please don't do it, your baby will be here soon enough, i know how you feel I was huge and miserable and swollen everywhere and just wanted my son out already I did everything from walking to sex and several people told me about the Castor Oil but I never even gave that a second thought once I did some research on it and what it could do to you and the baby during labor. It isn't worth it hunny. Best of luck to you and congrats on the new baby.

The risks are to high for me to do it. I'm 38w 4d pregnant right now and going stir crazy I know, but I just can't bring myself to risk it. From what I've read though some women go into labor within a few hours of taking a teaspoon of it, some women take it for days giving them the worse ever diareah in the world and end up in hospital due to extreme dehydration and infection, at which point they are given IV and antibiotics and sent home again... no baby. I think it depends on the woman that takes it. I just know i'd be one of the super unlucky few :( Check with your mom and other family members and see how they took to it, think that might be your best bet.

But its so horrible so if you are brave enough to try then best of luck but in most cases it causes a horrible case of the shtz which trigger all muscles since the walls are so close so you could very well go into labor but i never tried it i always went to a mall or some stores and walked around pushing a basket or something when i was close so grab a friend and power walk walking for hours at a time walk miles thats what i recommend less likely to make you sick so good luck with your decision just dont tell your doctor they might have a cow about it.:p

I decided to try it after being a week late with my daughter and there was no dilation at all. About 4 hours after I drunk that nasty stuff, my contractions started (pretty small at the time). By the next night I was in labor, water broke, etc. I had her that night after only 6 hours at the hospital. We had tried alot of the other tricks like sex and walking (we walked 5 miles both days on the weekend I was due and nothing!). I don't know if I could force myself to drink it again though. It really is disgusting!

Of my 4 kids, I used Castor oil twice. Bother were born on their due date. The other was induced and the other was a week early. 50%! Not bad.
My doctor told me that if you are ready to deliver, it will get you started and clean you out. If you aren't ready, it will clean you out.
Don't listen to the people that tell you it is horrible and dangerous. My DOCTOR told be about it.
BTW, it is kind-of gross. I mixed it into juice but it is oil so it doesn't mix well. If I was in that position again, I would do it again.

My sister did it but that's been 27 years ago. She did go into labor the next day but it was already past her due date so I don't know if she would have anyway or not. She did have a very fast delivery, only like 3 hours.

My mom took it with my brother and had him in 90 mins. That is way to fast for me. I wouldn't even have enough time to get my husband home, kids to babysitters, and to the hospital in time. I am 37 weeks and I wouldn't chance it. Plus I would think after labor you would have the runs too. That wouldn't be to great. Good luck and hope everything works out for you.

I am not judge meantal about this..
my mom used it for all 3 of her pregnancies
and it did not work, all 3 times, and it made her gag
but some people are different, and theyre bodies react
to different substances differentlly. I would say go for it,
but do not plan around it {its not 100% effective) people
say that "it is dangerous' but all 3 of us are as healthy as
can be and she had smooth labors and pregnancies.
good luck
hope this works for you!

I have never done it myself but have had several of my friends try it. And it really did nothing for them except give them a severe case of diarhea. My sister in law actually took it in beginning stages of labor to speed things up(don't know why she did that) and it actually stopped her labor for a couple of days.
