Is there anything I should watch out for or remember to do/not to do in the beginning of Final Fantasy XII?

I just recently started playing FFXII and I always play through the first time without cheats, but I do like to know if there is something that I absolutely should/should not do in a game that will hinder or help me in later side quests and such... Any help (without spoilers!!!) would be greatly appreciated.

In the beginning of the game you will go in a town under rabinastre and meet this old guy named Dalan at his house just dont take the item there, and then way later in the game there are a bunch of items all in rows on a beach dont take those either and then there is one more item you dont want to take but I cant remember where it is, sorry, but if you dont take these then later in the game you'll get to an optional area called the necros of nabudis where the enemies are really hard but not taking the items makes it possible to get the best spear in the game there, other wise the chance that you'll find it are slim to nill.
