We just had a bout with stomach virus run through the house, and I want to disinfect stuffed toys that I don't think would do well in the washing machine - is there another way?

Anyone have personal experience with the hot dryer melting one of those rattles inside the toy?

Yes, soak the toys in a mixture of household germicide, such as Dettol, and water. Then hand wash and use the washer's spin cycle to remove the remaining water.
It would be best to air-dry the toys since that would remove much of the Dettol smell, but you may wish to spray Febreze to help remove the germicical odour.

Even though some stuffed animals/toys would not do well in the washing machine you can still put them in the dryer and the heat will help disinfect along with putting a disinfectant spay vigorously on them first. Try adding a fabric sheet to help with the disinfectant smell.

You can spray them with lysol disinfectant. Lysol kills bacteria. There is one that is called "Lysol Antibacterial Kitchen cleaner". This should do well. However, most stuffed animals can safely be washed in the washer on the cold water, delicate cycle and then dried in the dryer on low or air dry. This really would be the better way to disinfect them.

Lysol will work but if they are toys for your baby then I usually dont like using spray on stuff they may put in their mouths. Putting the stuffed toys in the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes works well. Also if they are a little dirty you can put them in the dryer with a damp towel and it will freshen them up while disinfecting. It is a win-win situation.

Throw them in a large trash bag.....
If you seal them up in a large bag, spray Lysol in the bag, and set it outside for a week it will kill the germs. When you open the bag a week later run them through the dryer for about 15 minutes on the HOT cycle.
Hope this helps.

Yes, there is a really effective way of removing bugs by using a damp sponge with Milton sterilizing fluid and wipe down the toy and just leave to dry naturally. Works for us!

Gently mist them with anti-bacterial spray, or wipe them with Lysol wipes.
