Just bought an HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop and its modem only dials up at 28.8 bps where as my old Dell PC dials up at around 45.3 bps. Any advice on how to speed up the modem on my new laptop?

If you are using dialup, you are limited to what your ISP and telephone line provides. Something does sound wrong about this, if your older machine used the same dialup service at a faster rate. Any internal modem should be rated at 56K, though they won't dialup at that rate. Look at your system devices to see what is actually in the machine. Right click on My Computer, then select HardWare, then Device Manager. Look to see what your modem is and be sure it says it is operating properly. If it isn't or you don't have a 56K modem, take the machine back where you bought it and have them check it out FREE of charge.
