Illegal immigration or the War in Iraq? Which one will gain precedence for presidential platforms?

In terms of defending the homeland, an open border does nothing to secure us. War in Iraq, blah blah, don't want to fight them here.... I don't buy that argument. It's not like all those insurgents are going to buy plane tickets to the US to keep the fight up.

The president's view towards immigration is closer to that of the Democrats so I really hope they will do SOMETHING in the next 12 to 18 months. I think illegal immigration is a greater concern because 9/11 could have been elliminated if some of those men had been deported/arrested.

However, Iraq will continue to dominate the political stage in this country for YEARS so it will probably be the more important issue even in 2010 and 2012.

The greater concern should be illegal immigration because it affects this country directly. It can also help stop the flow of terrorists into this country. So, it can help in both arenas of national security and the war on terrorism. But the liberal media will push the agenda of what they deem an illegal war in Iraq and make it the bigger issue.

Neither is the greatest concern for national security. Border security is the greatest concern

Once the Iraq war dies down the terrorist elements will try to strike out against America by coming here. Until the borders can be secured (that includes airports and sea ports) there can be no homeland security.

Illegal immigration is not a direct concern, but rather is a consequence of lax border security. Secure the border and you've addressed the immigration illegal issue.

I think people are growing weary of the occupation in Iraq. I surmise that most people are slowly coming around to the fact that any endeavor to resolve a dispute between people who have centuries old animosity towards each other is a futile endeavor. So I think any politician the promises a simple and easy way to expedite our withdrawal from the Iraq quagmire will win the day, and most politicians are jumping on that bandwagon.

Since, I think Iraq is a solvable situation, in that it will be easy to placate most of the public, immigration will be the real hot button issue that will determine the fate of a candidate. It is, after all a domestic affair, and a complicated one at that. So this issue is far more salient to the lives of the average American than the Iraq war.

The War on Terror is of greatest concern to national security.

This is not to say that the borders must be better secured and illegal aliens deported.

The "war in Iraq" is more properly referred to as a "battlefield" in the war on terror.

Which will gain precedence? I suspect neither and both will be issues to some degree.

Immigration, whether illegal or legal is a greater concern. The Sep 11 murderers came into the USA via our borders.

There are 1200 terrorist groups in 150 cities in us with firearms. They hire an American to stand guard while they do something in the back woods areas. The FBI knows about this so why all the hoopla about Homeland Security and airport checks if they are already here? I wonder what is up with that. Unbelievable see ref below.

Tough to pick which is the most important but the war is already happening so it must be taken care of from day one of the next president if it is not over by then.
