I didn't know if copywrite laws applied when you make a CD of songs and give that CD away and do not make any money on it.

Yes...the copyright laws apply even if you break these laws by copying copyrighted materials and distributing them without monetary gain.

Technically, it's illegal. The owner of the copyright spent considerable time, effort, and money producing their work, and it's only right that they get royalties from people possessing their work.
