I feel so sad he fought such a good fight right up to the end.

More was done for Barbaro than would have been for any other racehorse. If he had lost his races you never would've heard from him. Euthanization was the best option, his quality of life was not good.

I had heard that he was fully recovered on the news.

The only announcement of it I could find is on Wikipedia.
The Penn Veterinary Medicine (Where Barbaro is recieving his medical treatment) site has made no announcement of it so there is the chance it just a rumour. I'm waiting to hear for sure from an official source.

Unlike most I support the owners decision to try and save Barbaro's life. I feel that as long as an animal can accept the treatment to help save it's life then it should be allowed to recieve the treatent.
That said, I do also support their decision to have Barbaro put down. It has be many months since his innitial injury and there has been set back after set back and I feel that he never would have fullied healed and when you carry 2000+ lbs on 4 thin legs... well it's just not something that can be done long term.

I was (am) really upset (not at the owners, drs or anything like that), just really bummed out. I had to put down my cat the day after thanksgiving so I know how diificult it is to have had to make that decision. Especiialy on a case that was so public, with some many people (on both sides) criticizing every move the owners made.

I just hope that all the wonderful memories of this magnificient animal remain with those who loved him in their time of need.

It was very sad. Barbaro will surely be missed. He was a great horse and very well loved at that.

They (the owners) tried every thing they could to save this magnificent animal. I think in memorial to Barbaro, I will euthanize my wife after dinner....Psyche!

It is so sad. It was for the better. It wouldn't have been right to make him live a life of discomfort. Things just started going downhill so fast.

Oh gods... =(

I couldn't believe it, but unfortunately it's true.

The UPenn site is swamped, but information is also here:

Gitana - it is not a rumor - see the above link. Also, CNN and other news outlets are reporting it.

He was never "Fully recovered" - his right hind that was broken had healed, but his left hind which developed laminitis in July was still trying to heal.
