A RESTRICTIVE clause defines the antecedent. In sentence no. 2, the relative clause defines the subject ("book"). It answers the question "what turned out to be long, dense and boring?" (the answer is, "the book that Mario wrote"). The information conveyed by restrictive clauses is essencial; it can't be left out.

NON-RESTRICTIVE clauses (as in sentences 1, 3 and 4) function as parenthetical expressions or phrases, that is, they can be omitted because they merely give more information on the subject. In other words, the sentences still make sense without them:

1. Her sister is coming for the weekend.
3. Rhode Island is in Northeastern United States.
4. The cost of the carpet is $500.

However, if we omit the restrictive clause (in 2), the sentence will not be clear:
2. The book turned out to be long, dense and boring. (What book? The book that Mario wrote)

#1 is the answer. The second clause is the restrictive clause because her sister is a Lawyer, not a writer or a cook, but a lawyer which narrows and clarifies the meaning of the sentence.
