The "surface" you can see is called the photosphere. The corona consists of the prominences that rise and fall from this surface.

The visible surface is called the photosphere. It doesn't really have a solid surface.

The photosphere is the visible surface in plain white light. Of course it is a hot gas, not solid at all.
