Sixteen teams advance to the playoffs, with 8 coming from each conference.
The seedings are based on record, with the exception that the division winners get an automatic top-four seeding in each conference, even if a team in another division has a better record than a first-place team. For example, the 22-23 Raptors currently occupy the fourth spot in the East despite having a worse record than Cleveland, Orlando and Indiana. The Raptors get that fourth spot because, despite their poor record, they are winning the Atlantic Division.

There are 3 divisions in the west and 3 divisions in the east. Each division has 5 teams, so there are 30 teams altogether. 16 of the 30 teams make it to the playoffs. Teams can either win there division and are automatically in or they can have one of the top 8 records in their half of the league.
