Can an iguana be trained to stay in a backyard in Arizona, or would it claw itself out into the wild?

If you build an enclosure, yes. And 3x6 won't be big enough for long, but if he's little and that sounds big enough, it'll do for now. Our outdoor iguana enclosure is 14x8x12. Don't use chicken wire because they'll cut their noses up on it. If night time temps are an issue, you can always do what we did so that we don't have to stress ours (they resent being taken from a big cage and put in a little cage for their own health) build a wooden box big enough for it to get into and purchase a radiant heater. Then insulate the box on the outside so the heat stays in. The best way to make the heat stay in is by using a flap door of some sort. On the outside of our "penthouse" we have... oh, I'm not sure what It's called, it's not roof shingles, but it's a sheet of the same stuff roof shingles are made from with a few slits cut into it at the opening in the box so all they have to do is push through. Depending on how big your iggy is, though, it may not be able to manage that... see what works.

But no, if you let him loose in your yard, he'll be gone in a minute.

It can be put in a large enclosure outside, but it won't stay around if it is just allowed to roam free. But I would be more worried about the humidity considering where you live. Iguanas arenative to tropical areas that generally have 70-80% humidity all the time. Arizona's air is extremely dry in comparison, so he may have some shedding problems in that environment. As a result of the dry air, you will also have temperature extremes to deal with, and iquanas are not well suited to that either. Be careful here.

You CAN'T give them a dog house like a dog and expect them to stay there. You CAN however build them an outdoor enclosure. Its pretty expensive, BUT if you want a good enclosure for your iguana its one of the best solutions for you, you can give them a bedroom or let them free roam as well. LOL "elmo4466" You had a 6' Bearded Dragon? Thatsounds very idiotic, sounds like me saying I had a 10' ball python.
Good Luck!

I would say it could be kept outside in a pen that it couldn't escape from. Use a small mesh wire that it couldn't claw through or get head or legs caught in and make sure the temp doesn't get low than 75 degrees. The cage could probably be 3'x6' or such so it will get ample exercise.

I had a 6 ft bearded dragon who was an outdoor guy, I had a little area that was plush grass and had a hanging heat light, and an enclosed wooden house, but mostly he ran the entire yard, chemicals and the cold are your 2 big factors, I had a pool, so I had to switch to natural cleaners, he liked to swim. and the cold was the other factor, but his dog house with the heat light worked just fine.
