I was recently watching CNN and I was encouraged to note that America is becoming increasing concerned about Iraq, loss of personal freedom, Bush etc. There was an interview with John Kerry , then they showed footage of a huge anti-war demonstration, I think it was in washington. All of which gave me great hope for the future.

They even had Jane Fonda there, who felt it was time to speak out AGAIN apparently.

This got me thinking. The LAST time they had anti-war marches, Jane Fonda speeches etc the anti war movement also had huge support from the music industry too. Country Joe and the Fish, Jefferson Airplane etc.

I'm curious. Are there any American singer-songwriters or bands which take an active stand against the war in Iraq? .. or has the music business become so commercialised that no-one can make statements like that nowadays?

Please note that this is a question specifically about MUSIC.and the music industry. .. and NOT the many other issues.

Green Day - they had a hit with American Idiot
Madonna - her recent tour was very anti bush and also held a desk to sign up to vote at her concerts.
Dixie Chicks - had a hit with "I'm not ready to make nice" after people said to get out of politics and back into music
Bruce Springsteen - his album the Rising mentioned the 9/11 and how badly it was handled

Moby and Public Enemy got together and did a track called Make Love **** War.

Eminem did an anti-war video.

Skinny Puppy had the cd The Greater Wrong of the Right.

Dixie Chicks spoke out aginst Bush but i don't think they have any anti-war songs.

During the first gulf war bands such as Ministry came out with NWO and during the recorded live version of Stigmata off the In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up LP screamed several f bombs against Bush, politicians in general, Jews, Arabs, Tipper Gore, etc.

You have had some musicians come out and support the troops but supporting soldiers doesn't mean you do or do not neccessarily support the war..

Iron Maiden who have written scores of songs about war have an new cd out about the war but it doesn't really take a position either way. The band is known for being very patriotic towards their homeland (the UK) and lead singer Bruce Dickinson was a former soldier and they have expressed concern over nuclear war but are pretty much storytellers having no opinion via their music.

There have been entire albums created specifically against Bush. Check out 'Rock Against Bush Vol. I and Vol II' , 'American Idiot' and note the Dixie Chicks, Green Day, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Rufus Wainright, etc...

I'm almost sure that System of a Down is anti-war, they have family over there and are worried that something might happen to them. That's one of the reasons why I like them. One of their songs Boom! is about war. In the video they are with the people that are protesting and are obviously against it. This was about 5 or 6 years ago.

Green Day had a go at the Bush administration's handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in the "Saints Are Coming" video that they did with U2.
