I have replaced an ordinary bulb with a flourescent energy saver bulb in an outside lamp . The light comes on automatically at nightfall and has a regular switch indoors, not a dimmer. It starts to flicker after it has warmed up but I can stop the flickering by pressing on the metal body of the lamp body. This seems weird. Is it an earthing problem or what? An ordinary bulb works fine.

You have a grounding problem. Or the part where you press at is connecting the grounding wire better.

Many automatic security lights that switch on/off according to light levels do not like energy-saving bulbs. You should check if yours is OK. Some newer ones are OK, while very old ones will definitely not work properly with saver bulbs.

Those florescent lamps are not designed to be used with photo cells(the thing that turns it on automatically) ,so you seem to be getting an earth leakage ,i would advise you to stop touching the holder until you change back to a normal lamp.

Have an electrician or yourself check all the electrical conections at the lamp and the switch. Could be a ground problem or the common wire (white usually). Good luck!

you probably just have to go with a normal bulb because flourescent lamps need a constant and even supply and i think maybe the photocell might be disturbing that
