If data is being transferred at the time, you can corrupt the data on your iPod (or computer, in some cases). This may mean having to reset the iPod, reinstall any updates, and reload your music/videos.

However, if no data is being tranfered, it's unlikely that anything bad will happen.

Don't make a habit out of unplugging with being told that it's OK. However, if you need to unplug it, it's very unlikely to do any permanent damage.

If your ipod is stuck on do not disconnect try this first. Leave the ipod connected and restart your computer (as in turn it off and let it reboot) When you open itunes again, the ipod will update and the do not disconnect should go away.

If not, then reset it. The way to reset is to unplug it, slide the hold switch back and forth twice then lay it on a flat surface and hold the menu and select button (the button in the middle) at the same time for 6 - 10 seconds and you should see the apple symbol appear. You are then good to go.

Hope this helped.

3 possibilities:

1) If itunes was writing to the disk at the time of the disconnect, you could corrupt your entire iPod music collection and you would need to restore from iTunes

2) You will inadvertently start a count down timer and ignition sequence for a nuclear missile destined to take out the enitre west coast of the US and jack Bauer will be showing up at your door shortly

3) People will laugh and point at you

most likely nothing.
however, it may freeze, and if so, you would have to restore it. restoring is easy and the instructions are on the apple website under the five Rs for ipods.
