it still promotes camaraderie, sportsmanship and fair play for all athletes in the world. before professional athletes were not allowed to compete, but they changed that so that everybody can participate. Now, i think Olympic Games are taking place because its a chance for the host country to profit from it. No country will host it if they will loose money. Billions of dollars are needed to host it, just building new state-of- art stadiums, hi-tech electronics needed, new hotels that will comprise the Olympic village, new transportation system, security, etc will blow your budget off limits. Sponsors, sales from products and endorsements should come in to pay for expenses incurred. Since the 1984 LA Games, hosting Olympic Games has become a big business.

the goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.
Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles."
