this law is outdated and a disgrace on a country that supposedly prides itself on racial and religous tolerance, it may have been accepted as a way of maintaining and protecting its monarchy in the middle ages but it has no place in the 21st century, this type prejudice is a disgrace on a modern country. practice what you preach UK before going around the world trying to right wrongs in other countries is my message to the government. this is religous bigotry in its truest form, how can u preach tolerance of others when your own laws go against it.

Have you not forgotten the history of Britain and the reason why they became Protestants in the first place?
Given the fact that the Queen is the defender of the faith, their silly argument is that you cannot have a Catholic loyal to the Crown so long as the Crown is Protestant.
I agree it's a silly law, but so is the silly law forbidding the six counties to return to the Republic of Ireland, afterall, we never gave them permission to take them in the first place, yet we are still a divided island :-(

I am British and have truly never heard of this law!!!! Are you sure it exists and you're not just talking about some outdated thing on the statute books since 1600??
I thought Tony Blair was a Catholic?!? His wife attends Catholic mass and his kids go to Catholic school!
If the law is still on the books then yeah of course it needs repealing as does the one about Catholics not sitting on the throne. They are obviously obsolete laws (like the American Constitution saying people shave the right to "bear arms"!) that need getting rid of. Noone takes any notice of them anymore anyway.
EDIT: Actually after reading your message I can see you're not British and just trying to attack the UK so maybe you should go and find out something about this country and our modern day British lives before spouting hackneyed outdated and ill-informed shite. We have all religions in the UK and religious freedom is a right we all share.

How confused some people are - and then have the neck to stir it up on this site! Mr Blair is NOT a catholic, but even if he were there would be no law to prevent his becoming PM. The Monarch quite obviously cannot be a catholic because he/she is Head of the Church of England.

i cannot find an actual law for prime minister
the monarch cannot be catholic
but i asume this is there because the prime minister must owe his allegience to the queen, defender of the faith , and not to the pope and rome.....
tony blair is an anglican by birth, not catholic, his wife is catholic and his children attend a catholic school. the family take mass at home and not in church because of security fears...
but he denies he will convert to catholisism

There is not such law, you are getting confused, there is a law to prevent the Monarch or Monarch in waiting from marrying a Catholic, and ANNE F is correct as to Tony Blair's leanings.

As an agnostic I totally agree. I wouldn't have a problem with a Catholic, Muslim or Pagan Prime Minister providing they did a good job.
Disraeli was jewish so I can't understand why this law even exists.

You may not be able to have Catholic Prime Minister, but should a blind, one-legged, black lesbian in a wheelchair apply, I am positive she would get the job. Probably do a better job too !!!!

Not true. A Catholic is not allowed to be the monarch and no monarch can marry a catholic and take the throne. It dates back to Mary Queen of Scots and has sound historical reasoning.
