it is not just Republicans in southern states.
Compare the former Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert with Nancy Pelosi.
Hastert is a walking heart attack. One's arteries harden just looking at the guy. Hastert gave a whole new meaning to pork barrel.

republicans are generally peasants at heart.
from as long as can be remembered peasants get fat as a symbol of wealth to others - the fatter the better.
also in colder locations, such as the mountains, peasants generally like to get fat in order to have an additional layer of insulation to help with cold nights...

people in the south tend to be fatter anyway man.
more roads + everything is far = drive to piggly wiggly.
plus, i think they fry vegetables before they eat them. stuff has to be fried to be edible
