I was watching with my 7 and 8 yr old hannah montana and the girl asked the same question. It's a pom if its only one and pom poms for more than one.

For anybody who cares--
I work for an athletic and sporting goods supply company. They're sold individually, and each one is called a pom. It's only when you have a pair that they're referred to as pompoms (or more correctly, pompons).
