Miserable, ignores you, doesn't concentrate when you give your order, shouts across the room to her mate, leaves dirty plates on the table, brings the wrong order, elbows you in the head, tips food in your lap, expects a tip!

Waitressing is a hard job and very stressful (I've never been a waitress, but I can only imagine). Sometimes they are very busy and try to keep up, but simply can't. I think if the room is near empty and the waitress ignores you...doesn't ask you if you need anything else, doesn't ask to refresh your drinks, doesn't remove your empty plates, doesn't serve you with politeness and respect, and maybe a little warmth, then this makes a poor waitress. But, there is something I've learned...we have no clue as to what is going on in this persons life. They can be carrying a heavy load and if so, this may be the reason behind why they are having an off day at work...ore even an off month. People need to learn tolerance of others and give each other the benefit of the doubt. I will give you an example. Many years ago I was in the passenger seat of my father's car. Another driver honked and yelled at him because he was driving too slow. This rude driver had no way of knowing that we had just left my Mother's bedside and that she had died only a couple hours earlier. I still remember feeling that the whole world should have stopped that day and it seemed incredible to me that everything else was going on as always even though our lives had forever changed...even more so my father's.

I used to waitress a few years ago, and I was not considered a bad waitress. But, just thinking about some of the bad service that I have received throughout my life, bad waitresses don't come back and ask if you want refills or anything else. They also don't come back to ask how your food is. They totally ignore you when you want your check, or don't drop the check off after your meal. They don't ask if they can remove used plates, and they should thank you for coming to the restaurant.

Everyone is obviously different, but the GENERAL aspects that a waitress is considered bad are the following:
1. After 10 mins or more of waiting in your table, she comes unfriendly (doesn't say "hi" or "welcome" at least) and expects you to have your order ready.
2. She doesn't check on you, meaning she doesn't come to you to ask if everything's alright or if I need anything else, and this is especially when the restaurant is barely busy.
3. She forgets the "details" of what you want in your order; for example you specifically don't want onions in your burger, and when you get your burger, there you have your undesirable onions...Ok, I mean if you tell her way more things you want or don't want I'll understand that, but something small and simple like the onions example is considered incompetant.
4. This one annoys me the most and I tip less than a buck for this: even when she checks, she doesn't pour more water when it's obvious that I'm about to be done with it WHILE I'm eating.

Someone who doesn't notice that your drink glass is empty. I've had waitresses who were very attentive and friendly but don't notice this. I drink a lot when I eat, and before I know it I have nothing to drink. Then I have to pause in eating while I wait for the waitress. For some reason I can't continue eating unless I have a drink.

A number of things: 1. Does not give you a glass of water as soon as possible. 2. Does not refill coffee when your out. 3. Fills your cup when its only 1 inch down. 3. After your meal comes, she doesn't give you bread until you ask for it. 4. Serves your meal too hot from heat lamp, or microwave. 5. Impatient, unfriendly and or rudeness. 6. Dirty clothes, 7. Having to wait to long for service. 8. Interrupting when you are having a conversation. 9. Being too eager.(bugging you to much) and 10. Well I think that covers it.
You should ask what makes a good waitress.

A bad attitude, rude, never smiles, looks like they don't care, they look they never do their hair or take care of themselves, plopping drinks down hard on the table, chewing gum, forgetting to put the order in or pick it up, never checking back.
I could probably reel off tons more, but that would be from my perspective as having had to train waitresses.

I was a waitress for a while...we had a comment box. We had a lot of people say Be more open and outgoing, Don't be messy, don't make them wait to long...but don't interupt if they are talking of if they just took a bite of food. The list goes on forever...everyone wants to be served differently....Just be friendly and polite and its all good!

Sal,
My vote goes to a waitress in a "posh" coffee house in Oxford. When she brought my bill she explained that she had "helpfully" worked my tip out and added it to the bill.
I checked the bill and found she had "tipped herself" 20% of the bill. When I queried this she said"people in London are tipping 20% now"
I told her "You think I'm daft" and she took the bill/money away and returned with the change.
Because her rudeness in asking for an inflated tip made me angry; I checked the change and found that she had already helped herself to 10% of the change and left me to tip her any more I fancied.
All this took place in a Coffee House in the Centre of Oxford which appears in the Guide Books as a "1700s Coaching House"
It seems that that old British tradition of highway robbery is still alive in our old Coaching Houses!!!
Keep Smiling!!!
The "Mac"

1. Takes 10 min. to get your drinks.
2. Orders your entree too soon, and it ends up coming while you're still eating your appetizer/salad.
3. Making me have to call them over to order something else and then wait 10 min. for it.
4. Touching/holding your glass/plate in the wrong/unsanitary fashion.
5. Overkill. Listen to your table and what they need, read them and try to tell if they're in a hurry, want some privacy or time, and don't walk up on them and stand there or start talking to them if they're in the middle of a sentence with one another or are hugging, kissing, etc.
6.One who does not go by the creed: the customer is always right. (Yes there are jerks who come in with a chip on their shoulder, but you will encounter people like that in every profession.)
7. One who reeks of smoke.
8. One who is not respectful or corteous.
