Church and State can only be seperated in a democracy, in which congress can write leglislation and voters can vote on it so as to decide where to draw the line. Examples of this are the recent Supreme Court decision banning prayer in public schools. And in my city we recently passed a measure to ban the posting of the Ten Commandments in a local park. If there is no democracy, then the government will decide for you hoew much power the church has. It could end up being a total Theocracy like Iran, where the religion IS the government.
And Abrahamism is the religious dogma involving the story of Abraham and his wife Sara and their maid, Hagar. Abe had sons with each of them, and the Muslims claim to be the desendents of the son of the maid while the Jews are the offspring of the son of Sarah. Yep--this simple, and most likely fictitious fable has led to much hate and division and blooshed.

This is not so much an answer as it is a clarification of a point. Church and state was never meant to be seperate in this country. People get the idea of seperation from a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote. Jefferson was writing to a friend of his telling him that the government should not meddle in the business of the Christian churches, but he also said that the church has an obligation to be involved in politics. Nowhere in our constitution does it say there is to be a seperation of church and state. It does state however that "The federal government shall not establish a national religion". I don't know how that got turned into seperation of church and state. There is one national political document that stated there should be seperation of church and state, and that was the Communist Manifesto.

This is one of those questions that has a different answer depending on who you ask. Christians believe in freedom of religion as the Constitution states. Athiests tend to believe it should be interpreted as freedom from religion. If you ask an athiest, the only people who should be allowed to hold public office are athiests. Go figure!
