Can President Bush really consider himself to be a Christian when he demands that he has the right to torture: as he did with his Presidential attachment to the McCane antitorture bill? Or is President Bush claiming to be a born again Christian merely for political gain? Is he a liar, a con-artist, a shyster?
Shyster: One who acts in an unscrupulous, unethical manner, especially in the practice of law AND POLITICS, a con-artist.
Please don't ignore the torture?

Kudos to you--good question. And you are exactly right--Bush's words and actions are not compatible with what Christ taught.
To "gianasanmarco"--That is not what Christ taught us: "Lovee your enemies; do good to those who hate you." Even in cases where we must defend ourselves, NOTHING in Christ's teachings justifies torture--period.

No, torture is always wrong. Also, let's not forget that loads of the people they tortured have now been released: they were obviously arrested on false pretences in the first place.
Apart from the obvious moral problems, remember also that evidence derived from torture is usually deemed inadmissable because torture itself can make people say whatever they think their torturer want to hear... even if it's completely made up. So that could mean that the torturer ends up punishing someone for crimes they didn't commit. Even more un-Christian!

No. But...let's be clear about exactly what is considered torture. Keeping someone uncomfortable and confused is not the same thing as electrocuting or burning a person.
Other that basic humane treatment, I am not sympathetic to criminals or terrorists. I would not want them tortured, but I don't want them babied either.
I have a question. What religion is torture compatible with?

What is torture in your eyes may not be in mine. Making someone uncomfortable IMO is not torture. Sleep deprivation and repeated constant exposure to loud music (as long as it is not to an extent that is causes permanent damage) IMO is not torture. Humiliation that doesn't cause physical harm IMO is not torture. To answer your question I would say no torture is not compatible with Christianity. Being harsh with people to extract information that may save many is OK IMO.

Torture is all part of war and a tool to gather information. We will always do it if we think we can gain some information that may save lifes of our own troops. This practice has always been going on. It goes on in every big Police dept in major cities today. Do not kid yourself if you think this does not go on.

The only thing that makes someone a christian is that they believe that christ has saved them. they are no better than any other person, and thats what they are taught.
I think its not so mcuh that he does things in the name of christianity, as much as you think he does. Christians arent robots, they do have thoughts and emotions like you.

THOSE ANIMALS DESERVE TO BE TORTURED. ARE YOU A TERRORIST SYMPATHIZER? YOU SHOULD CAMPAIGN IN IRAQ YOU MIGHT MAKE A POINT THERE. OR YOU MIGHT FIND THE POINT OF A KNIFE SHOVED IN YOUR THROAT. IF TORTURING A TERRORIST TELLS US WHEN THE NEXT ATTACK WILL BE, IT'S BUSH'S CHRISTIAN DUTY TO PROTECT AMERICA. WHO CARES IF THEY GET TORTURED.

Oh, but it really wasn't torture... it was just a means of obtaining information that was vital in protecting Bible-believin' Amerikuns.
