There's balls, which are long boring pageants held in private indoor settings and by invitation only.
There's parades, which are noisy outdoor celebrations and open to all.
Some parades are large and elaborate, usually put on by the established organizatios such as the Krewe of Endymion, Krewe of Rex, Krewe of Orpheus, etc. Many are named after the classical pagan gods.
Some parades are smaller and more boisterous, such as the Krewe du Dreux, Krewe of Cosmic Debris, Krewe du Vieux Carre, etc. These are put on by neighborhood organizations and have more fanciful names or are named after the neighborhood.
The Krewe of Zulu is in a category by itself, it is a large established organization that was formed in the early 1900's in response to bans of black people from joining the traditional krewes, so they started their own. It has some of the spoofing characteristics of the second group of organiztaions, but also it is large and well established, with elaborate traditions like the first group.
There are also spontaneous marching clubs that emerge from neighborhoods and family groups.
There are also the Mardi Gras Indians, Black people who wear elaborate stylised costumes and practice elaborate chants and other traditions. These are allegedly based on Indian costumes and traditions, but actually have far more resemblance to Haitian costumes and traditions connected with Mardi Gras. Interestingly, the Mardi Gras Indians got established in the early 1900's, aroudn the time a lot of Haitans came to New Orleans. However, the usual "Indian" explanation is better accepted by practitioners of these customs, if not by actual Native Americans.
There are also neighborhood customs such as "Baby Dolls" and "Bonesmen", where groups of people wear these theme costumes and go thru the neighborhoods.
There is also the "Second line", certain songs are used to alert the crowd to join in behind the main parade, and dance in procession. There are certain customs in connection with this, which can occur at mardi gras and also in other contexts such as jazz funerals. Anyone may join in a "second line", although some of the groups noted above are particularly likely to join in.
There are a few more but these are the main ones.
