'cause society has generated a "me first" mentality.

also, since there are more atheists now adays, people tend to reject the "God wants us to help others" policy, so they don't do it.

If by "modern thinking" you mean people in 1st world countries being apathetic to people in 3rd world countries.

hmmmm

There are two ways to answer that:

1 - people in first world countries are not apathetic. We give billions of dollars in aid to numerous 3rd world countries every year. It is in the 1st world's interest to stabilize poor and war-torn regions of the world to make them an economic and politically prosperous area.

2 - "Modern thinking" people understand that you cannot give ALL people the life you have. There are going to be people who either through poor choices they made or through their government's unwillingness or incompetence, will not have the same opportunities you do. Since there are ALWAYS going to be people in misery, there is no real incentive to rush to help them. The people you help will either fall back into miserable situations, or someone new will pop up to replace them.

Because if they dwelled on it, it would drive them crazy.
If I dwelled on the suffering around me, it would drive me
insane.
To dwell on sufferings that I can't do any thing to alleviate
or prevent would rob me of the strength to help a
suffering person close by.
There are modern thinking people that do volunteer and
charity work in diverse places. These are things
that they could not do if they had to dwell on sufferings
in a location that they could not get to.
You can't help suffering people nearby if you make yourself
sick over sufferings far away.
Just because i'm not omnipotent doesn't mean that I'm
callous.

I think it's a matter of being desensitized. When you are seeing something horrible every day, it ceases to become such a shock, and if it's something that causes a person to feel sad, upset, ashamed, helpless etc, the mind tends to shut down those feelings after a while to preserve sanity. We see so much suffering on the TV, and in newspapers and in reality every day, if we let ourselves be affected by it every time we'd be wrecks.
