They don't have to shout their good deeds from the rooftops but it seems like no one involved will tell you squat about what they do which causes speculation.

I've talked to both and am possibly about to join the Eastern Stars but I feel conflicted because I'm a Christian and I hear good and bad (as w/anything else in life) and I don't want to do ANYTHING that will jeopardize my Christian life and beliefs.

Really? have you talked to an actual mason or eastern star member?

Masonry stopped being a secret society in the early 1700's, since then it has been a society with secrets (although you could buy the complete ritual in a book store or read it on the internet). Ever seen those guys in Fez's on small bikes in parades? The Shriners? They are all masons and operate free children's hospitals in most if not all states.

Now, as masons swear not to tell their rituals and certain things associated with them (even though it's been publically availbe since the late 1700's), many of them will not discuss anything about masonry so as not to break their word. However most masons understand that talking about their various programs, charities, and scholarships is alright and would be glad to talk for hours about them if you want.

Joining Eastern Star will in no way conflict with Christian beliefs. My mother is in Eastern Star and is very religious and active in our church. In reality, Eastern Star is not very secretive. There are only a few things here and there that you are not allowed to know until you are a member. Those things are mainly ways to identify other Eastern Star members because back in the days of Hitler, masons were considered evil and they needed a way to ensure that the people they were talking to were really members

Freemasonry is an oath bound fraternal order of men which derives from the medieval fraternity of Freemasonry. We adhere to many of the Ancient Charges, laws, customs and legends of operative Freemasonry. We are loyal to the civilian government under which we exist. We inculcate moral and social virtues by symbolic application of the operative stonemasons' working tools. and by allegories, lectures and charges. Freemasonry obligates its members to obey the principles of brotherly love, equality, mutual aid, secrecy, and confidence. We have secret modes of recognition that permit members to recognize each other as brothers. We require a through examination into the mental, moral and physical qualifications of a petitioner and we admit men into the fraternity by secret ceremonies based in part on legends of the Craft.

Once a person has decided to apply for membership he fills out a petition signed by 2 members of the Lodge he desires to join. He gives the petition to one of the members along with the required initiation fee. The petition is read at the Lodge's next stated meeting when the Worshipful Master will appoint an investigating committee to interview the petitioner in person. The investigation committee will report back to the Lodge at the next stated meeting and the members present will vote to accept or reject the petitioner. Once the petitioner is accepted he is given the three degrees of Entered Apprentice - Fellow Craft - and the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. There are certain requirements a candidate must meet before he can proceed from one degree to the next.

One must obtain the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason before wearing any Masonic jewelry. One must have a Belief in a Supreme Being. The tenets of the Masonic Fraternity are " Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. " The Masonic Fraternity is NOT a Secret Society but rather a Society with Secrets. No matter what you have heard the Masonic Fraternity is NOT Satanic in nature.

If you are interested in pursuing interest in the Masonic Fraternity and are over 18 you contact a man whom you know to be a Mason for further information and an application. If under 18 suggest you inquire about the DeMolay Order.

If you are a Lady the Masonic Fraternity offers the Order of Eastern Star if over the age of 18 or the Order of Rainbow Girls or Job's Daughters for those under 18. Requirements for joining these Ladies Organizations can be obtained by contacting a member of the Masonic Fraternity Family in a local Lodge.

If no local Masonic Lodge is available for you to contact then contact the Grand Lodge of Masons in the State in which you reside. Be aware there are certain requirements which vary from State to State so suggest you contact a Masonic Fraternity Member directly.

Have you ever tried actually asking, or going to one of their meetings? The State Grand Chapter meetings are open to the public. If you want to go, feel free. Personally, I think they're really boring. My Granny is in Eastern Star and all the men on my father's side have been in the Masons for generations. I've gone to lots of meetings. You could go too if you wanted to. Just ask politely. If you're going to be all mean and grumpy about it don't even bother asking.
