There is a store called Things Remembered at the mall. It's a nationwide chain (if it is not in your state, there are stores almost identical). They have beautiful baby gifts. Personalized jewelry, a birth certificate holder, and other beautiful nick-nacks. Look in there, they have a great selection.
Or send her a gift bastet from a company like Edible Arrangements...while she's in the hospital she can nibble on fresh fruit. http://www.ediblearrangements.com

Well jewelry type items are forever so if you go that route make sure it is of good quality so that it wont turn green or do something funky. Pictures are good as well but if you do a book type thing either get a big book so that they can add pictures as the baby gets older or doa smaller book to focus on the birth and first few days. Something nice to do would be get her some different bath items from bath & body works or a similar store so tha she can pamper herself on a rough day like shower gel, body cream, lotion, etc. The reason I say the bath stuff is that will be her one escape from baby and most people forget about mom after baby comes and baby always gets stuff at the hospital when mom gets what flowers they die shortly after going home and she can use the bath stuff for many times after going home. Also dont just focus on the new mom part look for something that will go on as being a mom or woman because the new mom phase is short lived. So good luck with your gift

When I gave birth, the only one thing I really wanted after giving birth was some real food! The hospital food was horrible and I hadn't eaten anything in a while (I had a long labor) so I had my family bring me food. Maybe make your friend a homemade meal, I think she'd appreciate that more than anything right after labor. She'll be working hard and need it! Or, are you good at sewing? My friend made me a quilt, with pictures of me pregnant and the ultrasound pictures, and pictures of me and my husband. Not sure how she did it (I think she used some sort of iron on things to get the pictures on the fabric) but it was awesome! I actually put it on the wall instead of using it.
Good luck! :)

When I was having my first baby, I received a couple things that I really enjoyed.
One was a casting kit/photo frame for either hands or feet of baby. You'd simply place the foot/hand into thie clay like stuff and it would take a print, you'd let it dry and it would sit into the side of the photo frame which you can place a picture on the other side for whatever picture you choose. (I did it when he was a year old)
You can find them at walmart, of any baby store really, not sure what they're called.
Another thing was a gift set in lavender! oh boy did I love that in the hospital even after I got home. Talk about refreshing for both me and my new baby. It came with soaps & lotions for me, shampoo candles all scented like lavender, plus it had baby lotions, soap and washclothes with Baby and me imprinted on it. That was nice, it was so simple and yet after a long hard delivery and hospital food, the best thing was to smell so wonderful and refreshed!
Another was something from proflowers, they have tons of things there for new mothers/ babies.
I got something when I had my daughter two years ago, and it was a pink basket, it's got a set of first outfits in it. A body suit, booties/mittens cap, washcloth teddy bear, blankets. They have different ones now but still with the same things. For boys & girls. you can always add chocolates ballons, candies, bears.. they've got additions that make it even better. They've got other gift sets also that seem nice, like spa gifts sets of soaps and things a new mom would just love to spoil herself with when baby is naping or even baby bath sets of soaps.
So I liked those, it was nice to smell something wonderful, and have a refreshing lift to a long day and or when I got home with each of my kids. Flowers are nice too, but I'd go with a gift set that would come in handy more than changing water for flowers (dont' get me wrong, love flowers!)
So check out any flower delivery place online and or even around your town, they'd most likely be able to put something together just perfect for her & baby. There's proflowers, FTD, hallmark even... I can't remember the others but those are my favorties.
It's nice to know people put thought into a new begining for someone! Have fun looking, and get pictures you can later look back on with your friend!

I assume you'll be there, Either during the birth, Or right after.
Take LOTS of pictures for her, Her w/baby, Dad w/baby, any siblings w/baby, you w/baby...any other relatives that might be present, and take pictures of the baby by his/herself.
Develop them before she leaves the hospital, And buy a cute little album, And put them in there, Along with the date and maybe the time? they were taken, and give her the album! :]
I don't know about other mommies, But as a mommy of 3, I LOVE having the pictures, I just never find the time to get them put in albums like they should be.
She'll appreciate not only the pictures, But the fact that they're already in an album! :] One less worry for a new mommy. :]

one thing i did for my best friend when she had her baby (she had a c-section) i just went to the supermarket and bought all the ingredientsto make her a chicken soup, caus ethe one thing they don't get in the hospital is a good home cooked meal, and when i got there she started crying cause she said that nobody ever thought of that and believe me when u just have a baby u get soooo hungry and chicken soup is one of the best things for them to eat, Now the baby just turned 1 and ever since then she always remembers that i was the only one to think about her instead of just the baby.

Find your nearest hallmark store and buy her the Willow tree mother and child figurine. They are made with the thought of pure simplicity. I absolutely love the ones that I ahve recieved. This is a collection that can grow and is centered around family. You can find them online also. Susan Lordi is the designer.
Good luck and happy shopping.

One of those cool casting things that you can do for the baby's hand and foot print :) I got one from my sister for this baby, and one from my best friend on my first. I love them!
http://www.castinggifts.com/ or something like that anyway. You can usually find them anywhere they sell baby gifts. Toys R Us had them even.
