Sugar Ray Robinson. Ali reckoned he, Sugar Ray, was the only man better than him, Ali. I asked my Dad once about the old boxers before TV - he was a former ABA finalist - and he said Ali would have beaten Marciano on points, Ali would have cut him to ribbons but Marciano would have kept going and going. Tyson at his peak would have been interesting against Ali but Tyson at his peak lasted much less than Ali.
Other contenders include Julio Cesar Chavez, Hearns and Joe Louis, but most good judges agree the best pound-for-pound fighter was Sugar Ray.
