Do you see the CD-rom device in your Device manager. If so delete it then reboot. It will re-install the drivers. If this doesn't work, if you still don't see anything you may need to re-mapp your CD-ROM device to a different drive letter. This can happen if you ever plug flash drives in.

I have your answer all from an expert at the site cited below:

Assuming the ribbon cable hasn't come off inside the laptop, you should try a system restore to a date around the time that you think the drive last worked. A system restore leaves your data intact but restores windows files to as they were at an earlier date.

System restore: Click Start, Click All Programs, Accessories, system tools. Click System Restore. When the program comes up, click Restore to an earlier time, then click on a bold date on the calendar on the left. Bold dates are dates with system backups.

If system restore doesn't work, try this, copied from the website below:

1. Click Start, then Run, then enter REGEDIT to open the Registry Editor
2. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/
CurrentControlSet/
Control/Class entry ( I had to break it up 'cause yahoo wasn't displaying it properly but it is all one word).
3. Under the Class entry, double click on {4D36E965
-E325
-11CE
-BFC1
-08002BE10318} (again one word) (or copy and paste this number into find and search for it, but make sure the result is the proper hkey_local....).
4. In the right-hand pane, click ONCE to select the UpperFilters entry
5. Make sure the UpperFilters entry is highlighted, press Delete, then Yes.
6. In the right-hand pane, click ONCE to select the LowerFilters entry
7. Make sure the LowerFilters entry is highlighted, press Delete, then Yes.
8. Close the Registry Editor by clicking File, Exit.

reboot.

The site below has a pic of what you're looking for.

Try the above methods first then unplug and remove the drive. Bring yourmachine up, turn it all of the way off. Reinser your drive and make sure it is connected well then turn the machine on again - it should say new device found and set it up

Try this go to your start up menu then control panel then system then device manger there you will see all the hardware on your computer see if there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the CD drive. if there is check the properties to see if it is the driver or a software conflict.
