At 26 weeks my OB put me on Lexapro for severe depression. I am now 29 weeks and already starting to feel much better. I would like to know some of your stories regarding anti-depressant use during pregnancy. I am terrified of the risks to baby although my doctor has assured me that the benefits far outweigh the risks. Please share your experiences.

Hi there! I would be happy to answer your question. I have worked in mental health for 8 years. I have seen hundreds of women give birth to healthy, normal babies after taking antidepressants during pregnancy. So far, there have been very few clinical trials done, but the ones that have been done have not shown any risks. With the exception of Paxil in the 3rd trimester, but that study is even iffy. In general, we look at the risk/benefit analysis. If you are miserable and depressed, you are not likely to be there for your baby, and will not feel good yourself. So, if taking these meds helps YOU and there is such a low risk of harm, generally doctors will advise you to take the meds. This decision is very personal, and should only be made with a qualified professional. In my opinion, taking care of yourself is helping your baby. Best of luck!

I was on Celexa for my anxiety and my doctor recommended I get off of it because there has been no clear studies to whether anxiety/depression pills harm the fetus. I think it is considered "class c". Some doctors will keep you on if they feel you would be better off with them because in some cases you could get worse and it would end up harming the baby anyway. As there are no clear studies that it is good for the baby there is also no clear studies that it is not good for the baby. The doctor knows what is best and will rate it on an individual basis. My doctor said if my anxiety came back that I could take half a pill for short periods of time

My Psychiatrist advised me that he did not pick to take a danger being on an anti depressant even as pregnant. He as lo stated that once you're pregnant that your hormones are on an strengthen. And that you do not opt to be on an anti-depressant even as pregnant. very virtually like nature takes its direction. in spite of the undeniable fact that he did say that once the delivery of the toddler i mandatory to be positioned again on, for the terror postpartum melancholy. in spite of the undeniable fact that, thinking your difficulty i might want to certainly search for suggestion from such as your well being care specialist. there is no clinical evidence that Zoloft may reason harm to the toddler, in spite of the undeniable fact that they theory an identical element about Prozac and paxil and it has those days pop out that it may impression a being pregnant. search for suggestion from such as your OB and then see a psychiatrist about drugs.. you are able to also try counseling???

i took zoloft during and directly after both of my pregnancies and it helped so much. your doctor would NEVER have prescribed you a medication that would do any amount of signficant harm to you or your baby. he is the professional and knows what is best for both of you. your baby deserves a happy, healthy mother and if Lexapro can contribute to that, then you should take it. i would say however to continue taking it and talking to your doctor after you deliver and watch out for signs of any post partum depression as your hormones levels go crazy right after birth.
