I don't know, but orange is the visual complement to blue and yellow is adjacent to orange on the color wheel so this is one possible explanation. Stare at a blue object long enough then look away and the afterimage you see will be yellow-orange. The reverse is also true. Hence seeing one is seeing another in a way.

Another possibility is that blue is considered a cool color and yellow and orange are considered warm colors. You can't have cool without warm, or warm without cool - just as you can't have good without evil.

I think he meant that one color can not exist in the world without the others.He was an artist,so he had an appreciation for all colors.
